A Meer-suit is a special kind of environment suit designed to protect the wearer from excessive mana levels and wild magic. ("Meer" is a corruption of MRE, for Magically-Resistant Environment Suit — similar to how the HMMWV got corrupted to "Humvee" in our world.)
Meer-suits are built in a variety of different strengths, and are rated for a maximum acute dose and a maximum sustained dose. Mana field strength is measured in kilochannings (kCh); the lightest Meer-suits are rated for an acute dose of 20,000 kCh and a sustained dose of 1,000 kCh. Regions of normal mana typically have field strengths in the 10-20 kCh range; the Telvari Rift gives off 25,000 kCh at a distance of 100 meters when it is quiescent, and can reach over a million kilochannings when it surges. If a wearer is exposed to a field strength higher than the suit is rated for, the excess will leak in and may affect the wearer in a variety of ways.
Light-duty Meer-suits resemble space-suits, with a flexible body and a rigid helmet with a faceplate. The suits have respirators with mana scrubbers inside, as well as a climate-control system to keep the wearer from getting too hot or cold.
Maximum-strength Meer-suits are actually powered armor, with servo-powered limbs and a lead-lined protective casing. These suits can withstand an acute dose of up to 1 million kCh.
Meer-suits are used around the world in areas where mana radiation is a concern, including the Telvari Rift, the Desert of Dreaming, and the clean-up sites for particularly bad magical mishaps.
