Background
The most frightening types of hauntings caused by Fallen, true demonic spirits that rebelled against Iluvatar and were cast out of His presence. The Fallen are incapable of taking any physical form, and uncomfortable with their lack of a physical body — and they compensate for it by living inside someone else's body.
Often this manifests itself as nothing more than an oppression — strange aches and pains, night terrors, or enslavement to some vice such as alcoholism — but occasionally this flares into a more violent possession, a literal co-opting of the victim's body. The person can go into convulsive seizures, attack others with the strength of twenty men, inflict horrible injuries upon himself or herself, or suffer any of numerous other terrifying effects. The possession may be accompanied by telekinetic or pyrokinetic phenomena, or a foul-smelling amber liquid with the consistency of honey (called amrith) that seeps from the walls of the room.
When Fallen are involved in a haunting, their actions tend to be subtle, deliberately designed to mislead investigators into thinking another type of haunting is involved.
Goals and Exorcism
The Fallen's only goal seems to be the misery and suffering of the human race. They do not respond to incantations, blessings, curses, or any other action by a non-Meraist/Theist Lightbringer or any magician, conjuror or warlock. Non-Meraist/Theist Healers' techniques will not heal the wounds caused by a Fallen upon its victim.
People possessed by the Fallen react in anger or terror when a devout Follower (or Meraist) enters the room, but the Fallen will nearly always leave if the Followers continue their "deliverance," as they call it, long enough. When asked about it, the Followers will only say that they "have authority over" the Fallen, given to them by their Eli.
Lothanasi who suspect that a Fallen is present at a haunting will usually immediately seek the assistance of an exorcist from one of the Follower faiths.1
Rise of the Followers, Decline of the Fallen
Rates of Fallen activity have declined with the increased prominence of the Follower religions, whose adherents can exercise power over them in Yahshua's name. However, Fallen can still be drawn to an area by mortal activities, including sacrifices to the Adversary and certain types of ritual magic.
