Dragons

True dragons are the descendants of primordial elemental guardians, powerful beings that watched over the Earth from the first days of its creation. Somewhere around 100 million years ago these creatures were joined with the saurian bodies of the Earth's dominant life forms (RL dinosaurs and other giant reptiles). It's unknown whether they chose to do this or were forced to do it by some being more powerful than themselves, but after that they gained the ability to reproduce (rarely) at the cost of becoming mortal (though they can live for 800 years or more).

Appearance

Varies, particularly if they they have shape-shifting capabilities.

Western Dragons, such as those found in western Galendor, have long necks and tails, strong bodies, four legs, and two bat-like wings. Their traditional nesting sites are in the Dragon Mountains, the Vysehrad Mountains in south-central Galendor, and the Amrigane Mountains of Kitchlande.

Eastern Dragons have long, serpentine bodies, one pair of small legs, numerous fins, and no wings (though they can still fly through the use of magical fields). Their heads are large, with prominent eyes, fins, and barbels. Their traditional nesting sites are in the mountains of Yamato, the Oriental Coastlands, and Khumar, and in the northern reaches of Fan Shoar.

Subtypes

Western and Eastern dragons appear to be separate species and do not interbreed.

Dragons come in every color imaginable; these are not "races" per se, as each individual's color pattern is unique. A dragon's scales lose some of their luster as they grow older, and the colors generally grow more drab; a brightly-colored dragon is probably relatively young.

Although a dragon may have a "primary" color, like other reptiles the coloring is more varied. A dragon may have scales of different shades of the same color, or other colors mixed into the primary color. For example, known dragons in Metamor's history include a green dragon with yellow chest plates, a blue dragon with purple fins and barbels, and a grey dragon who was dark on the top with lighter scales on the bottom.

Abilities

Dragons are big, powerful, strong, magically adept, and highly intelligent, and all of these qualities continue to increase over their long life-spans. They develop a magical ability and a mastery that is unsurpassed by any other race. The older ones gain the ability to shapeshift into any form of their choosing, and some of them live clandestinely among humans.

They do have breath weapons, which develops after a certain age for each dragon.

Dragons are able to fly, mainly due to innate magical fields that compensate for the physics of their bodies.

Typical Behavior

Behavior is as varied within the draconic race as it is within any other race.

One thing that is well-known is that no one ever messes with a female dragon's egg.1

Society

Dragons are very rare outside of the Dragon Mountains. Despite this, as a very powerful race, they do have an influence on the rest of the world.

Religion

Unknown, but the goddess Yajiit is known to live among the dragons with a small family community of humans.

Dragons Today

For the most part, dragons stay within the Dragon Federation and most people have no idea what they actually do. Most dragons take a stance of non-interference in the affairs of the mammal races, though there are exceptions.

The dragons have little use for technology — most of them can remember when steam engines first came into widespread use, and they have difficulty adapting to the frenetic pace of human advancement — but their magic is the most powerful on Earth.2 Those dragons who spend long periods of time in humanoid form become accustomed to the pace of human society, however, and these individuals can be just as tech-savvy as any human.

Famous Dragons

One dragon who is known to haunt the members of the Metamor Imperial Air Force is a black dragon named Guerra.

Another dragon who had been living among humans as the socialite Sigrid Narvalla recently revealed her true race when her egg was stolen from her home in Metamor City.3

Dragons and Dragonettes

It is unknown what, if any, relationship (genetic or magical) exists between dragons and dragonettes.
