Thread necro!

As with what Kristy said, the Vessel cannot be the only one with the singular talent of not dissolving into the Gestalt. He has the advantage of never having been in a true gestalt, because his teep ability was below the consideration of the collective, so he long ago established an sense of Self too strong to be overwhelmed when the mega-hivemind arises. The Collective regularly forms and breaks group Psi unities, so they're used to it, expect it, and open themselves to the prospective touch of a gestalt and - WHAM - the super meme blows into them like a January blizzard, burying them in the white noise of 'Find others, help Me'.

The thing about the Vessel is this: He was never 'good' enough, his teep abilities too weak. The Collective never accepted him, turned him away, and deep down in his subconscious he rather resents that. He has lost his willingness to be a Part of them, and built up his mental defenses to that end.
When he suddenly finds that he can suddenly Reach them, and push, he pushes with everything he's got, maintaining his Self throughout.

Yeah, so he's got this annoying little ankle biter trying to muscle in - but he's no mage, he's got nothing for the spirit to latch onto. His Psi let him pass their tests, but it was a pure false-positive. Annoyed by the pest he snags it by the scruff of the neck and boots it out the proverbial mental 'door', directly into the now ravening Gestalt…

Nasoj or whomever has never dealt with teeps, they were never a potent force in his time era and he has only attracted magic talent in the centuries since, so when the Vessel spreads his awareness into the collective Nasoj is taken along for the ride - as a bundle of snowflakes - only to suddenly find his little snowflake self consumed by the blizzard only to become so many snowdrifts. His knowledge and history is likewise scattered across this psionic arctic wonderland and it takes him considerable time and monumental effort to drag himself back.

By the time he regains his Self he's too weak to contest the current Vessel, or even be heard shouting "What the f*k are you doing!?".

[Kristy]
Okay, so what aside from being "PCs" makes Abbey and her cell unique among the Collective?[/Kristy]

Like the Vessel, they have established their individual Egos and group sense of Self. One or more of them have instinctive, unconscious shields strong enough to withstand the Suggestion, even when they open themselves to the expanding Gestalt. Those individuals, or even just one, reflexively expands their shields when they hear the roaring voices, allowing the others to leap back and immediately GTFO of there, maintaining their individuality and group Self. Or maybe even remain a part of the Gestalt but with the volume dial turned way down - they can hear what's going on, but not so powerfully it turns them into drones. That also gives them a leg up on dealing with it - intermediaries between the Teep Drone Army and everyone else.

As for Murikeer… the sudden dissolution of Nasoj will hit him like a freight train loaded with Tanks charging down hill with no brakes.
And he can do *nothing* against teeps. He assumes their abilities are magic and tries to sever them from their Mana - only to fail. He's thrown into a bit of a panic and has to rely on the mortal Heroes to tell him WTF is going on.
Sure, he can still level city blocks, but against a single Teeper poking holes in his thoughts or throwing him around with TK, he's a ragdoll. A very, very powerful ragdoll when his anger is aroused… but still, left completely out of his element.

After Nasoj's spirit has manifested in a mortal vessel and vanquished, Muri suddenly finds himself standing before the Void, knowing that Nasoj can claw his way back through their shared link.
But standing there before that rift, quite visible to everyone, are a Mink and a white skunk (the former glowering at the latter, but both beaming at him). He joins them and they step into the rift, which collapses rather violently inward behind them.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Character Chat
Forum thread: The Vessel: Who Is He?

Here are some story ideas that I've had but haven't done anything with yet. I'm putting them here because some of them I've already forgotten once, and I don't want to forget them again.

Independent Stories

1.) Sasha being taken in by the Psi Collective as a girl of 11-12. What happened with her birth family? We know some of them are still alive, because they come to her funeral. We know she had to leave the Ecclesia at some point. I mentioned in a feedback show that Fiona formed a bond with her early, that Sasha was the first close friend she had, and that she developed romantic feelings for Sasha that Sasha initially couldn't return — so, out of love for her friend, Sasha made the choice to have her sexuality "re-streamed" from a Kinsey 0 (completely straight) to roughly a Kinsey 4 (a little more gay than straight). Was this the choice that led to her breaking with the Ecclesia? Both Sasha and Fiona were foundlings, outsiders in the creche world of the Hive; this may have been what led them to bond.

2.) Explore what Artax is up to now that he's on the run from Imperial Intelligence. He's living in disguise, of course, which isn't much of a problem for him — but how are things for Tunstall? And what is Artax doing to continue his work while his shop is closed?

3.) Horror story where the Sommers Cell's children are being targeted by the revenant of Victor hin'Kavos. At least some of this should be from the older children's POV.

4.) Morgan meets for coffee with another vampire, a woman in the lower ranks of the Syndicate and/or the Church of Eternal Brotherhood. The other woman is trying to encourage Morgan to come back into the fold. This would be more of a short vignette or character study.

5.) Character study on Kevin, the gay pyrokinetic from Making the Cut, and his partner Steven. What's the story behind them? What do their lives look like on the edges of the Collective, especially now that the Sommers Cell has been doing its little experiment for a few years? Oooh — what if they petitioned the Hive to adopt a foundling telepath?!

Series: Psi Ops

A series of short novels following Brian, Fiona, Sasha, Del and Trace during their tour of duty with MID. Fast-paced military science fiction with a strong focus on the growing bonds between the characters and their coming of age from raw recruits to mature professionals.

Book 1: MID takes its new recruits away from Metamor City and puts them through psi-op boot camp. Brian finds that he is being moved into field work instead of the analyst position he was hoping for, and has to deal with the fears and insecurities that come from being a non-athletic kid being thrown into combat exercises and brutal physical training.

Later books: (Unsure about the order of these)
* Espionage and sabotage against Yakuza-style crime gangs in one of the Southlands corporate states.
* Tracking down the "Angels" of Majestic Industries' Project Tanaatha — where do they come from, who do they work for, and what threat do they pose to the Empire?
* Taking down the warlord at the heart of an international drug trade (Rain?).
* Counter-Intelligence against spies of a rival nation operating in the Empire.
* A telepathic community is located in a remote part of the world that has been targeted for ethnic cleansing. In accordance with MID's agreement with the Psi Collective, the psi ops are sent in to extract their people from the war zone.
* An MID operative has gone rogue, perhaps having been bought off by the Vamps or Majestic Industries. The psi-ops need to track him down and catch him.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Plotting
Forum thread: Story ideas

I like the casino idea, and the Syndicate would definitely be the owners (or at least the money behind the official owners). Nona would be a better candidate for Raf's companion than Kate, unless you set the story a year or two back from the current timeline and make it one of Kate's undercover investigations in her Kathleen Kittridge persona. THINGS UNSEEN leads to some major changes in Kate's life, the full ramifications of which fall out in the next book (which I'm currently plotting).

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Plotting
Forum thread: Rafak's stoy arcs

Figured I'd posted an update and brainstorm publicly.

I've written some "mashed potato" scenes. The kind of thing that can be fit into just about any story with a little tailoring and I'm still fleshing out/auditing ideas for the "meat" part of it. Currently I'm toying with the idea that some kids from some important houses lost big at a high-end casino and are convinced that things were rigged somehow. They hire Rafak to try and prove it. Going to want to get him a wingman/woman to go along just so I as the author have someone for him to talk to. I'm toying with the idea of Kate or Nona (that was a great scene in BoS with her btw, very nicely done from a script point of view at least. I still haven't gotten around to listening to the audio versions. I need to do that.) Once I decide on who I can backfill a reason based on appearances or skill set. Vamps will probably run the casino, but I'll probably use them as just a red herring side trail before they discover the actual mischief, to be decided on.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Plotting
Forum thread: Rafak's stoy arcs

That's a good question. Have you listened to the audio dramas featuring Rafak Aliri yet? He's proven to be a very popular character for the Balticon "Metamor City Live" episodes.

The Case of the Golden Egg

Rafak Aliri and the Book of Shadows

It might be interesting to delve deeper into one of the streams Rafak has already explored.
I sat down to write the past couple nights and this was the arc I picked back up. As I'm writing, though, I wonder if it's a good idea. It draws on a lot of esotera of the universe that are in the Bible, but haven't been explored in other stories. Taanatha for example, and WorldNet in general. I wonder if at this juncture is a good idea to keep broadening the viewscope or whether it would be better to keep adding flesh to those elements that have already been highlighted. Any thoughts on whether this would still be a good addition to the universe?

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Plotting
Forum thread: Rafak's stoy arcs

Hi Mystic!

Metamor City is alive and well. THINGS UNSEEN, the next novel, is coming out this fall in ebook and audiobook. The existing stories are available on Smashwords at [http://www.smashwords.com/books/search?query=metamor+city]. And I'm hard at work plotting out book three, THE LOST AND THE LEAST. We've been quiet for a while, but folks are going to hear from us again very soon. :)

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / General Discussion
Forum thread: Checking in

Hi Worland,

There really hasn't been much discussion on the wiki since the early days when I was hashing out the details of the universe and the overall plot arc. It's more of an ever-growing reference site for the writers than a social community, though, so I'm not really worried about the lack of activity.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / General Discussion
Forum thread: Where has everyone gone?

Feel free to take this apart…

Delkari

Government: Minarchist
Capital: Baitam
Borders: South- Rukilia, North- Quenardya, East- unknown, Southwest- unknown, West- unknown, Northwest- unknown (little orange yellow nation on the big map that hits both Quenardya & Rukilia)

Geography

History

Delkari is a nation started by refugees.

Rukilia has gone through several expansionistic phases, growing it's country into its current size over time. About 500 CR, during one such phases, the city of Delkari didn't like the idea of becoming servants to the Naga.

The Delkarians, while respecting the aedra and daedra, followed a different philosphy.

Mostly an Universalist philosophy, they do believe in re-incarnation. While the daedra found a way to trap souls in the Hells, once a soul passes through the Veil they are reborn into the natural world to learn all the aspects of Truth.

The major difference is that the Truth is not the Truth of the Universe… but the Truth of the Self.

The Truth of the Self is represented in the image of the Floating Flame, the balance of Passion with Reason, the Spirit and the Body.

And to learn the truth of one's self, you could not be bowing down to another. So one night, called the Night of Freedom's Fire, the Delkari packced up their belongings, set the city on fire behind them, and fled into the mountains of the north. They found a nice spot on a small plateau in the mountains that provided what they need- security against the naga, a place to grow food, a nearby river that went out the Central Sea (not quite into Rukilia, but a little too close for comfort), and a pass up into Quenardya.

Delkari Today

Delkari is rich in natural resources, but the Delkarian people realized early on that they couldn't just squander that richness and open themselves to needing assistance from Rukilia. They do facilitate some trade, but their biggest export is art. One of Delkari's natural (and renewable) resources is a plant called flame weed (akin to the real life stinging nettle, Urtica dioica), which is a component of a number of different alchemical potions and the fiber is used in various fabrics. There is also a puppeterring art that is very intricate and well respected.

The capital city of Baitam is the home of the martial art of Vadkalan, which was developed after the Night of Freedom's Fire.

They have a fairly unique government. Partially by virtue of a small population that can and wants to maintain the system, they have very minimal government institutions.

In most nations, this might not work, but the strong personal ethical focus of Vadkalan and its prevalence in the culture makes it possible for a primarily minarchist state to exist.

Military service is not mandatory, but many Delkarians join the military for at least one tour of service to contribute to the security of the country as a whole.

Relations with Other Nations

Delkari does it best to be neutral and cordial with its neighbors. They remain wary of Rukilia, but realize that it is not always a justified fear. They work well with Quenardya, but realize that they cannot be as friendly as they may want to be as to maintain a neutral stance.

As the other neighboring nations are not defined at this time, unless they are being antagonistic, Delkari will not be the aggressor (partially due to practicality, partially due to their general focus on self-growth and realization and a distaste of imposing will and restrictions on another).

Author's Notes

Delkari is a combination of Indonesian elements and Southern Indian (Kerala specifically).
Geography is like Romania, with the envrioment, flora, and fauna of Indonesia, minus many of the bad enviromental issue.

Sources Rukilia Tide of Mist

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalari

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalaripayat

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / World-Building
Forum thread: Nation Proposal

Kim the Comicbook Goddess and I have an idea for a vamp character (and it's your fault, Raven/Chris… you'll see why in a few lines. grin). But we need a story for her to help flesh her out (I think we'll have a name by the time the SSDWC not-party is over)…

Either lower rank Syndicate (underling or low-level specialist), or maybe a member of the Church of the Eternal Brotherhood that has Syndicate contacts/friends/lineage connections.

One of the things she does on a regular basis, for fun, for hunting, and for business only when she has to… is to go clubbing. In bright, shiny clubs with dance-floors and pounding music. Wearing perky-goth style clothes…. and glitter. Lots of glitter. Not illusion based glitter… the real stuff. And while it's a pain to clean up properly (with the OCD that all vamps seem to inherit), she feels like using illusion for the visual effect would "just be cheating".

There's something that you said at Balticon would never happen, because your vampires don't sparkle. But… this one does. evil laugh

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Character Chat
Forum thread: Vampires Wanted

Graci (Gra-SEE) Greenstar is Silvaan with a touch of Fae. Her family is from Quenardya, and from a long line of Silvaan with the occasional full human and full Elven spouses/lovers adding into the genetics. It is not known when the fae blood was added into the mix.

When she was a teen she came to Metamor City to stay with an aunt while on a tour to loose herself in the various libraries of the Empire. She decided to stay for a while, and now has a MS in Library Science from Empire University (her specialization is in Ancient History). She currently works at the Reference Desk at the Main Branch of the Metamor City Library (which *should* be a wonder to behold).

She is a solidly built woman, with generous curves from her human ancestry and the Fae blood in her. Her features are fine and delicate, as befitting her Elven forebearers. Her hair is between silver and blonde, fine and soft with a touch of wave to it. Graci often wears her long hair braided and then wrapped into a bun (in fact it's a sign that she trusts someone if she lets her hair down, literally). Her eyes are an electric green that glow slightly (another aspect of the Fae blood that shines through); she wears glasses both to cover the glow and to fit with the "librarian" stereotype that many humans have.

She loves the quiet of the library, and is usually gentle and helpful to the people who ask her questions… but if you catch her with a question that either hits one of her specialties she can be drawn into a very animated discussion. And if you present her with something she knows nothing about, she'll crawl through the Worldnet and whatever tomes, parchments, and scrolls that she can get her hands on to find the answer.

She'd have some minor magical ability… mainly mage sight, some fae style glamor, but nothing powerful. Her main function would be as a information source for other characters.

She'd probably know Artax… or at least know of him. The Old Man may not be playing the Mage Guilds game… but he's got his fingers in just enough pots for an astute mind to notice him.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Character Chat
Forum thread: Character proposal- Graci Greenstar

Hello everyone…
I've gone and started taking a lot of information from the Original Writers' Bible at transform.to/~ravenb into the Wiki Writers' Bible here.

I've not modified this information much, so while it's in the Wiki…. there is still a lot of outdated information in these basic imports. The stories that have been (and will be) published on the podcast feed further mold the universe (which is just so cool…), but conflicts with the original Bible.

So if you look at a number of the new pages, there are notes all over the place that things need to be confirmed/updated by the powers that be.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / World-Building
Forum thread: Major updating in the Writer's Bible

His semen has been collected and used to create a lot of new baby teeks, but the same killer instinct that made him such an effective operative also made him a lousy candidate for fatherhood. The Elders are keeping a close eye on those kids, watching for signs that Victor's instability might have been inherited. Worst case, those kids will be singled out early for psychic therapy. And, of course, some of them are likely to make very good soldiers when they grow up.

Come to think of it, I've been thinking about doing a story about Victor's oldest biological child, who could be in her late teens or early twenties by now (2000 CR). How will she be treated once it becomes known that her father was a monster?
The predispositions you list make a lot of sense. But genetic/medical issues don't have to be just mental illnesses. For example electrokinetic may be pre-disposed to a weak or erratic heartbeat, and egoist may have auto-immune issues (and some of their power may just naturally be always used to combat that problem)…

We've also seen where certain mental traits will disqualify someone from the breeding pool… Victor for example. (Although I'm trying to remember, while at work, if Victor was just excluded from breeding cells but has genetic material on file for potential use later).

Perhaps once the Collective has enough data they may take the secondary traits into account, but it seems like they are in an arms race of sorts (it just that each of their weapons take years to develop) and are trying to increase their population at an incredible rate.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Tech Talk
Forum thread: Secondary genetics in regards to psionics

Hello everyone. This started as a question to our fearless leader… but it's his fault because he asked me questions about Indar, from the story I placed into the Interregnum called "Tide of Mist". And damn it… I need those answers.

Indar is ex-army (a special forces equivalent team)… so I asked how the army is set up and run because that may give me more clues onto how Indar was affected by his training. And there's not much information on it, so we get to build it.

I am not very versed in the workings of any military, beyond what military/action sci-fi I've read and some friends who've served in just about every branch of the US military there is. I'm certainly willing to learn/read…

What direction I got from Chris was that the feel would be somewhere between modern US & UK, with naming conventions leaning towards the UK style. If we take what I did in Tide of Mist before knowing this, there would have to be at least some minor changes in the naming from UK convention.

~Mildred

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / World-Building
Forum thread: Imperial Armed Forces

In regards to the genetics of psionics, are there examples of secondary traits related to psionics?

For example, in the real world it is theorized that the genetic predisposition for alcoholism is a secondary trait for the genetic predisposition for extreme creativity.

Is it possible for certain psionic gifts to have as a secondary trait a predisposition towards a particular mental illness that can't be fixed without direct and highly precise genetic manipulation(like if you are a powerful enough telepath there is a very, very high chance that you will become schizophrenic or if you were a powerful empath it is a very good bet that you will develop chemical based depression)?

I think that it makes sense that this wouldn't be dealt with by the collective because of two reasons. First, there aren't enough individuals who would qualify to be able to uncover this as a trend and second, the people that would express these traits would be valuable enough for the secondary traits to be tolerated.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Tech Talk
Forum thread: Secondary genetics in regards to psionics

The Curse of Sarua is a separate curse from the Metamorian Curse. It was dually placed on the runic weapon Kuu'nep as well as the bloodline of the thief who originally stole the weapon long before Erik's time. Erik is of this cursed bloodline as well as the the character Clara. So yes, at it core it is mostly a cursed bloodline that transforms the cursee into a berzerk draconic form every sundown once the bloodline curse surfaces. Exposure to the runic weapon forces this bloodline curse to surface.

Erik's version is a tailored amalgam of the proto version of the Metamorian curse and the Saruan curse coupled with some other spells which gave Erik's body regenerative properties and a skin which dispersed magical effects. Nasoj originally tried turning him into his own version of a kamikaze biological superweapon only without the kamikaze part and complete obedience in the decade prior to the Battle of the Three Gates. This Nasoj controlled version got his obedience spells as well as most of his mind scrambled from the magical ward thrown up during the Battle of the Three Gates. After his body entered a comatose-like sleep, the mind somewhat repaired itself over a decade. He awoke with many of these spells starting to unravel throwing him between a human form and a berzerk dragon-like state. Exposure to the Metamor Keep curse along with some of the best mages allowed him to have these spells rewoven into a stable humanoid dragon shape and rebuild a new identity as Erik Darkwing.

Erik probably could be classified as an immortal although in the Metamor City era he is definitely in the latter years of his life cycle even with the regenerative spells which have extended the already long dragon one. The runic weapon chooses the Master who will wield it and Erik was its last Master. Exposure over the long centuries of to this weapon coupled to the increased mana eventually allowed the Saruan curse to force Erik into a complete draconic shape. The spell resitant hide also increased in its potence which has left Erik without the abiliity to conjure virtually any spell he knows. This combined with a body which never stopped growing made it very hard for him to maneuver anywher in the city. Hence why in the stories Erik will mostly appear as a technomagical avatar called NetDragon who runs a business, acts as Clara's mentor and tries to be her surrogate father.

Clara Firemane is a childish hacker prodigy from the street who heralds from this same cursed bloodline. Accidental exposure to the runic weapon caused her latent bloodline curse to surface. Centuries of study on the network of spells which bind Erik together have allowed for a "cure" to the Saruan curse. The cursee undergoes exposure to the Metamorian curse which can bind them in one of the three shapes thus stabilizing but not eliminating the Saruan curse. Clara undergoes this procedure, but because the runic artifact leaves Erik and choses Clara as its new Master, it amplifies the Saruan curse and she is stabilized in a half human, half dragon form. Clara gets put under the legal care of Erik Darwing and is forced to leave her old life of information theft behind. She must deal with these changes along with her past which comes creeping back to find her. She is probably never going to fully utilize the runic artifact she possesses just because to do so would go against her personality. Although just possessing it leads to its own set of complications.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Character Chat
Forum thread: An updated MK charater, his organization, and his protoge

Vampires can't handle direct sunlight, period. They'd have to be wearing a Meer-suit or a lead-lined set of power armor to withstand it. Otherwise, they burn up pretty fast — and the younger and weaker-blooded they are, the faster it happens.

It actually isn't anything as mundane as UV that causes the vampires damage in direct sun; the effect is a spiritual and magical one. The sun is the ultimate source of life on the earth, and as such sunlight is tightly bound up with life-aspected mana. Since vampires are animated by death-aspected mana, sunlight disrupts their delicate magical metabolism. Sunlight is also a purifying force tied to fire-aspected mana, which is a further anathema to the vampires wholly unnatural physiology. Direct sunlight is, therefore, a double-whammy, setting them on fire while neutralizing the undead regenerative powers that might counteract the damage.

Ryx is right about cars, though — glass is opaque to most wavelengths of light, so the sunlight that does filter through is greatly reduced in strength. It'll still hurt like hell if direct sunlight is falling on them through untinted glass, but it won't kill them.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Character Chat
Forum thread: Daylight vampires

As far as I know, half-Elves are the only half-humans we've seen who were not affected by the Curse. A pure-blooded kitsune shouldn't be affected, but the kamui have interbred a lot with humans over the years, so he may have been affected that way.

In any case, Elves and half-Elves are definitely immune.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Tech Talk
Forum thread: The curse and Non-humans

Years and years ago Raven and I discussed just this very matter and as Raven's following replies illustrate not much has changed… Vamps do not like daylight. They won't instantly combust in a flash of ash at the merest touch of sunlight but I imagine that to the vamp it feels like they might.

They can operate in areas where the particular aspects of sunlight that harm them are filtered out. Obviously getting away from the harmful deep infrared is relatively simple by going lower into the city or deeper into buildings that absorb low frequencies. High-range UV is more difficult to evade as it is as effective when 'reflected' (off of buildings, windows, ect) as it is upon direct exposure so merely moving deeper into the city's bowels still leaves them exposed… even retreating into buildings is not wholly effective as diffuse light still penetrates quite deeply into an average commercial building with lots of windows.

Strangely enough, automobiles are quite vampire friendly… the glass is both IR and UV filtering (the heavily tinted deep black windows). Not that a vamp will have all of its strength and powers, still (there's more to the Sun than just light that affects them), but it's not nearly so uncomfortable.

Now… sunscreen?? Nooooooo…. It just will not provide enough protection for a vamp to want to bother applying it. It might make being in direct sunlight a little less uncomfortable, but not by much. Heavy leather clothing and bulky motorcycle helmets would be about as comfortable on a hot day…

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Character Chat
Forum thread: Daylight vampires

Historically the Curse did not affect humans that had mixed ancestry (i.e. Lutin, Elf, ect).

Any non-human constituent in the blood was enough to prevent the curse affixing itself to mixed-bloods though it did catch a few by some unknown means (a mixed human/lutin was affected, as was a Kitsune).

The Curse is strange and fickle… that's the hard and fast rule you should consider. It just does not act as one expects that it should in particularly strange situations.

And those anti-curse amulets/charms/tattoos/implants are only expected to hold it at bay under normal circumstances…. *evil laughter*

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Tech Talk
Forum thread: The curse and Non-humans

You have to be at least part human for the Curse to affect you. This was due to the tactical purpose of the Curse: most of Nasoj's infantry was composed of non-humans at the time the Curse was used, and he didn't want to worry about his own troops getting caught in the blast.

Half-Elves (including Silvaan) are a special exception to the rule that human crossbreeds are affected. This is because Elves have ambient magic in their auras that resists changes to their nature. It's possible to create a transformation spell that affects Elves and half-Elves, but it has to be specially designed to target them.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Tech Talk
Forum thread: The curse and Non-humans

I haven't established much about it. Basically, it means that the teep is stealing from another person's life force through draining off their emotions, and using that energy to restore his/her own psi reserves (the "chi", if you will). The Nightmare in Troubled Minds had this ability and used it as its primary method of feeding. It is possible for a powerful human teep to do this, too, but it's considered reprehensible by all sane telepaths.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / World-Building
Forum thread: psychic vampirism

TimeGlider lets you make a visual time line, its public and easy to collaborate on, so any member can add events and time lines. You can add pics, details about events, event span, etc… The only downsides is the app is still in beta testing so it glitches once in awhile (not too often fortunately), and there is no way to make your own year/calander system so its limited to the whole BCE and CE thing, but CR translates well when overlayed on our system so it works out.

So far I've added what is on the events page from the Metamor City and Metamor Keep wikis that had dates to the overall Metamor time line, and the stories that also have dates listed on Metamor City's.
Would this work?

Parmur aka pseudo vamp- Creatures of the night, these intelligent lesser daedra hunt predominately man and sometimes elf. They are unable to consume flesh that has blood still flowing through it. The blood combined with the flesh causes an allergic reaction in them that can be fatal if too much is ingested. They drain the blood out of their victims first in a manner similar to a vampire's feeding. A key difference in an attack are the four puncture markings and the general savagery of the wound, if the creature has not already consumed the flesh, the true source of creatures' sustenance. If only blood is drained, it is usually a clear sign of a Parmur so addicted to narcotic affects of the blood that they forgo the rest of their feeding. Such individuals usually lose mental stability, succumb to narcosis on a regular basis, and eventually starve to death. The euphoric sensations from the blood serve as an instinctual safeguard to prevent anaphylaxis.

Parmur are generally completely bald and so pale that a vampire would look rosy flush next to one. Their skin has absolutely no protection from sunlight and thus they blister and burn very rapidly in direct sunlight. Their capability of regenerating tissue probably came as an adaptation to those that hunted in the dawn or dusk hours allowing them some maneuverablility in direct sunlight. They have four distinct fangs two upper and two lower that are non retractable. They are usually solitary hunters relying on others only when absolutely needed. Parmur exhibit extreme strength and bursts of high speed which allows them to overcome and overpower their prey rather than rely on ambush tactics or domineering.

Parmur seem to be a mockery of the vampire species. They first appeared after vampires were well established but no single Daedra Lord has ever owned up to their creation. It is suspected that Baal was their progenitor, but even he never admitted they were his. Some Parmur have been able to avoid Lightbringer retribution by consuming raw pig flesh, however this act normally leaves them hungering for something more. Those able to curb their hunger can usually be found within the ranks of their "cousins" in the Syndicate. These are usually very few and far between, yet these few have become invaluable tools of the Syndicate. Their ability to function in the sunt has found them predominantly used as daylight shock troopers able to strike fear into those too ignorant to realize the impossibility of a sunlight vampire. Parmur have also been extremely effective at physically coercing information from targets to be brought back in alive. They have a bad habit of channeling their pain and anger from the daylight exposure to their targets.

Would sending something like this after the runner as a means to find the identity of the employer be warranted if the runner inadvertently killed a lot of people from the sabotage and the runner is known for keeping her mouth shut about her employment? In example the employer knows of a weakness in the containment fields of some pretty nasty stuff. They know that the power systems for these fields are linked to the security systems of another project. They hire this runner because of her record to ensure she gets in and actually pulls of the theft and sabotage. She remotely steals the info and sabotages many of the systems. By powering down the security systems she inadvertently shuts the power of the containment fields. Because of her ability and speed, the runner is in and out of there before the alarms notifying of imminent containment field collapse even trigger; if they even trigger at all.

Thank you,

Justin the NetDragon

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Character Chat
Forum thread: Daylight vampires

Hi Tavon,

The mythology of Metamor City doesn't allow for daywalking vampires. The sunlight weakness is an inherent flaw in how they are built. (Vamps can walk around when it's overcast, but they're greatly weakened and don't have access to their superhuman powers, so they don't usually risk it.) For emergency daylight operations, remember that the Syndicate has a large number of non-vamps on its payroll. Perhaps the Syndicate sends a half-fiend soldier to do the dirty work — one with his own taste for human blood.

However, remember Malcolm's attitude toward runners: he considers them hired help, and he doesn't put out contracts on the help. On the other hand, he could certainly send someone to capture the runner and bring her back to him — and perhaps her employers would rather kill her than risk the item falling back into the Syndicate's hands…

Cheers,

Chris

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Character Chat
Forum thread: Daylight vampires

Overall, the general understanding in your universe seems to be that vampires become walking tiki torches in direct sunlight. I was wondering if the mechanics behind vampires would allow an aberration. I know sunblock wouldn't cut it, they'd still end up rather well done. If such an individual could exist he would be invaluable to Malcolm Ard'Valos as a shock trooper, able to catch targets during the daylight where he or she would drop their guard feeling relatively safe from direct vampire reprisal.

In the story I'm contemplating the main character is an extremely good hacker/ sometime Runner. She steals something from the Vampire Syndicate as a means to finally get out of the streets, the money she was offered for the contract would do this and then some. Where the "daylight" vamp would fit in would be as an immediate reprisal to something so important that it couldn't wait even 12 hours before it had to be retrieved. The main character stole it in the daylight figuring she could get a head start on any serious Syndicate retaliation.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Character Chat
Forum thread: Daylight vampires

One of the things I wanted Dretheran Vamps to have was a certain scale of interpretation of his messages. Since he is not around all his followers all the time and at the time of the release of Circle of Blood he didn't think to mention them. That would mean that Dretheran Vamps would have to try and take Circle of Blood's philosophies and test them with current events and in the end you end up with divergence of opinions even among followers. It would be interesting and that might lead to interesting discussions.

I was thinking I might release a short piece of writing that is select passages or an abridged version of Circle of Blood.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Character Chat
Forum thread: Thaddius Drethera: The Vampire Philosopher

*grin* Just got a chance to read this. I like it! The Dretherian philosophy is one that Mistress Talia herself would find a lot to appreciate about; as a former Lightbringer priestess, she understands the concept of the powerful who are bestowed with responsibility to protect the weak.

Not that Talia can come out and actually give the Dretherans her blessing. In accordance with the ethos of Mother Lilith, part of helping humanity lies in helping them to be strong and healthy, letting them go through hardships so that they can emerge stronger. Mainstream vampire thought would say that coddling humans does them no favors, and that vampires must fulfill their role as predators in order to ensure the health of the "herd".

I can envision a whole range of possible attitudes among the vamps, from the hardcore Lilian philosophy that the weak must be killed and eaten to the feel-good Dretheran ideal that humans must be nurtured and protected in exchange for their gift of blood. Most vamps probably fall somewhere in the middle, seeing humans as livestock that must be cared for and kept healthy, but that one shouldn't get too sentimental about.

This is actually very helpful because it gives me a philosophical anchor point for Morgan — or, at least, an anchor point that she could be drawn to. Growing up in a secular family, influenced by a spiritual-minded governess, then disowned and cast adrift in the world, Morgan doesn't have a community of faith to call her own. She won't go to the CEB because she finds the mainstream vampire society loathsome, but she can't come on the holy ground of many of the other churches, either. Meeting a Dretheran might give her life a much-needed sense of direction.

As for Thaddius's views on psis, I can foresee at least three possibilities:
1.) He sees psis as an evolution of humanity that will eventually allow it to transcend the need for the vampires' protection, thus allowing the vamps to see their purpose fulfilled. The psis' emergence should be nurtured and celebrated, a sign that humans are ascending to become the vampires' equals.
2.) He sees psis as an aberration, a disruption of the natural symbiotic balance between human and vampire. It must be watched carefully, lest this "aberration" turn cancerous and threaten the future of both species.
3.) He sees psis as analogous to an immune response by the body: vampires abused their symbiosis and became parasites, and for their sins the human race has evolved a weapon to destroy them. The proper response is for vampires to commit themselves to a restoration of the symbiotic relationship, to make the first gesture of vulnerability so that the defense system will no longer be needed.

#2 is the most likely to be accepted among vampires, since even unbonded vamps get nervous around somebody who could potentially turn their powers back on them. #3 is a reasonable "third way" compromise view that would allow the Dretherans to keep their nonviolent ethos pure while acknowledging the danger that the psis pose to vampires.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Character Chat
Forum thread: Thaddius Drethera: The Vampire Philosopher

"The Vampire and Human are symbionts. Without the Human the Vampire lacks a process of breeding and feeding. We must stay humble to that fact that we need Humans as much as they need us." -Thaddius Drethera, The Circle of Blood, pg. 259

Thaddius Drethera has been turned for enough years that even he forgets almost all of his living identity. In 1979 his sire died, freeing Thaddius from servitude to his rather overbearing master. He seized the opportunity to finish and spread the book of philosophy he wrote on the nature of what it means to be in between and what the responsibilities are in their unique position on this planet.

"A Sire is your mother and father in this world. They made the effort to create who you are and as a Childe you have a responsibility to your Sire. What many of our kind have forgotten is this is a two way connection. The Sire is as much bound to the Childe as Childe is to Sire. Remember that you are responsible to guide your childe through their rebirth, and like a parent you can be cruel or kind, but you are responsible" -Thaddius Drethera, The Circle of Blood, pg. 76

Thaddius's philosophy has spread to some of his kind, creating a small circle within the vampire community; a brotherhood known as the Dretherans. They come from many walks of life but follow Drethera's teachings of respect for what he calls the "circle of the world". These Dretherans are known to higher up vampires. They are regularly mocked and considered the weak of Vampire culture, but when a PR issue comes up between mundies and vamps, many will point to them as a symbol of the shaky truce the two keep. They are known to try and rehabilitate vampires hurt by blood-bonds and by nature only turn the living when they either volunteer or to save their lives.

"Have respect for the living. We are the ones given abilities to protect them and in turn they give us their life essence so we may continue. It is a donation, a charity, make sure you always treat it as such." -Thaddius Drethera, The Circle of Blood, pg. 100

The Dretherian philosophy focuses ont he Vampire taking a role in nature as a symbiont to Humanity. They take nourishment and reproduce from the human population and in turn the Vampires are to be guardians and protector's of mankind. Many Vamps interpret this as a justification for the Vampire influence over society. Drethera also has strong opinions on the rights and responsibilities of Childe and Sire and compares them heavily to the relationship of parent and child. There is emphasis on peaceful cohabitation with Humans and to use their abilities to help them in any way in turn for their willing donation of their life essence. Many intelligentsia and scholars who read up on Dretheran philosophy can be led to become donors or even ask to be turned themselves. In Dretheran philosophy, being between is not a bad thing, it is simply one's chosen or destined role in the cosmos.

I thought this would be an interesting point of divergence and addition of diversity to the philosophical outlook of vamps in Metamor city. If you need to correct me or have anything more to add I do want to add more here, but I'd like to go ahead with blessings and maybe some pointers or suggestions beforehand. I'd also be interested if I could get some ideas on thinking of Thaddius' feelings towards the Psi Collective.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Character Chat
Forum thread: Thaddius Drethera: The Vampire Philosopher

Hi Tristan!

1.) The Curse is most likely to go "wrong" if a person loses his/her protective amulet. Without Kyia's direct intervention, the version of the Curse that a person gets is totally random.

2.) People choose their desired form by submitting an application form to the Citadel and then waiting for it to reach Majestrix Kyia's desk. During the wee hours of the morning, when her staff is asleep, Kyia sets aside some time to find the people whose applications have reached her and adjust the weave of the Curse around their individual bodies. Once this has been done, one of Kyia's staffers processes the forms and sends back a notification to the person that their desired version of the Curse is ready. The amulet can then be taken off (if it's the over-the-shoulders kind) or removed by a doctor (if it's an implant).

3.) There is no single Theriomorph culture. Theriomorphs, like most Keepers, are divided more by class/social status than by race or ethnicity. Within social strata, though, there are certain patterns that emerge among theriomorphs:

Nobility: The oldest and greatest noble houses of Metamor were all present in the Valley when the Curse was first laid, and struggled for years to defend the Keep against the Dark Wizard Nasoj and various other threats. Because of this, the houses have generally adopted the forms of their heroic ancestors: House Brightleaf are foxes, House Matthias are rats, and House Hassan are horses and other equines. They have to periodically "out-cross" mundane members of their families to the members of other houses, so as to preserve their genetic diversity and stave off feralism (see the notes in the wiki). The nobles are proud of their forms because they embody the memories of their honored ancestors. They may display some behavioral traits associated with their forms — the Brightleafs are known for being clever and slightly crazy, Matthiases for being crafty, bold and prolific, and Hassans for being faithful and hard-working — but for the most part they act like nobility anywhere else in the Empire.

Upper Class Commoners: The rich non-nobles generally only choose to take on the theriomorph variant Curse if they can obtain some advantage from it — e.g., a businessman might take on the Curse to attract a wife from a noble family. There isn't much of a cultural tradition of theriomorphs in this social class.

Middle Class: The theriomorph curse at the middle-class level is mostly a vehicle for social interaction. Think of the Elks Lodge or the Lions Club in our world — and then think literally. Middle-class furballs tend to play very seriously with the imagery of their chosen animals, with lots of ceremonies and weekend excursions out to the woods and the like. Once they get back to their daily lives, they generally leave the animal-related stuff back at the lodge.

Street Rats: At this level of the City, "pack mentality" becomes a very literal reality. Gangs of all types are common on the Street, and it's not uncommon for them to be modeled on wolves, lions, and other pack-hunting predators. (Bulls are also sometimes used for their strength, ferocity and purported sexual prowess, even though they're herbivores.) The pack IS the day-to-day reality for these people; they don't have a "normal life" to go home to. As a result, these tend to be the most animalistic theriomorphs in their behavior and social structure.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / World-Building
Forum thread: Social Theriomorphs

Was thinking of working this short story out to be around 6000 - 9000 words in total.

A general plotline I was working on and will edit this post as i develop it on my own or with feedback is such:

Part 1:
Late at night in Metamor city's deep dark underground, the lowest of the low levels, a woman can be heard shrieking for help. Her cry falls upon one set of ears, a vampire with less than upstanding morals who essentially hears a dinner bell. He runs to find her and when he does, he sees her change into her mid form. The woman is a Theriomorph and is tied tot he animal form of a queen ant. The scene ends witht he unfortunate vampire becoming dinner for the woman's many many many (did i say many?) children.

Part 2:
The investigation of disappearances in the underground of Metamor city, (perhaps you could recommend which MCPD would be best for the lead role here or I could invent one) and their investigation leads them into a little bit of what is considered Theriomorph culture and eventually ends with them having an early confrontation with these ant theriomorphs and the hunt is on to find them.

Part 3:
Our protagonists from part 2 are on a hunt to find the colony and try to enlist various means to find it in ways only Metamor City could provide. This builds up to a raid on the colony and in the very end a final confrontation witht he queen. How this could be dealt with in the end is up in the air I'm open to suggestion. This could also be the point of revelation on how the curse could go so very wrong and the steps the queen went through as she transformed from Human to abomination

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Plotting
Forum thread: Outline: Deep

A sizable colony of sentient, or quasi-sentient, ants (or Termites, or other subterrainian colony insects) would not necessarily be a 'bad' thing, especially if they took up residence in the lowest levels of the city and did not attempt to eat other sentients… but then, they're called the 'Bowels of the city' for a reason. Much of the detritus of daily existance makes its way to the lower levels and would provide a true cornucopia for an omniverous hive-insect; either directly (immediate food) or indirectly (fertilizer for vast fungus farms with the ants surviving from the fungus).

A fungus-fed colony would be more amenable to co-existance with Metamor as a whole as the colony would not be activly hunting for ready sources of available food… living or dead.

I would imagine, also, that these ants would be highly detested by vampires and other undead since the ants would see them as 'dead' and attempt to make them into fungus chow. ;D

If you're looking at Bees you've got different problems as a sizable hive would require prodigious quantities of honey-making materials and flowers would simply be far, far too small to provide the required amounts.

Wasps would seek specific prey types and this would eventually lead to direct conflict with Metamor's citizenry.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / World-Building
Forum thread: Social Theriomorphs

Belated on my part again (sorry about that, been a busy month), but it certainly was worth the ride. Thanks very much for writing it. Was a lot of fun to read, and a lot of fun to comment on. I don't often get the chance to review while a story is in progress, and it is definitely a different and altogether more engaging process than doing so after the fact.

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Plotting
Forum thread: Making the Cut

Very good story. Didn't go the way I thought it was going to based on the first two sections, which is a good thing. I was worried about it being a bit too cliche, but you mixed up the plot turns enough to avoid it completely :)

Aside from my usual complaint and the red eyes I can't think of an improvement. The end in particular was particularly enjoyable to read, both with Isaac's rejection of the Fae (I loved the delivery about the changed reason for not being able to look at her) and Abbey's invitation to take him in. :)

Forum category: MK2K Discussion / Plotting
Forum thread: New Story: Whispers in the Wood
