Background
Velena (və-LĀ-nä) was the goddess of love and beauty. Because true love is honest and forthright and despises deception, Velena was also the goddess of truth.
She draws power from acts of love done in her name, including sexual relations between two truly devoted and loving individuals. Another important act of love is self-sacrifice to save another, which is a tremendous source of power for Velena.
Velena was one of the three fallen goddesses that accompanied the Starchild, Merai, on a tour of Lightbringer communities around the world after the Great Fall— Akkala, Artela and Velena had been among the first of the deities to accept the validity of Iluvatar's judgment, and they sought to learn what they could by traveling among their worshipers, helping people as best they could.
Holy Symbol
A stylized looking-glass, consisting of a circle (representing the mirror) with a cross attached to the bottom (representing the handle).
Symbolic Creatures
Cat (for femininity), swan (for beauty) and hummingbird (for joy and love).
Holy Day
Vele'kema February 19th. Women who hoped to be blessed by Velena's favor made donations of flowers or jewelry to the local temple, or engaged in acts of charity toward the poor and needy. Girls who have had their first period in the previous year were brought before the altar at the Lothanasi temple, where they were anointed with perfumed oil and blessed by the priest in Velena's name. This was the traditional rite of passage for girls in western Galendor, and after this ceremony the girl was considered a woman and eligible for marriage.
Current Activities
Velena is a walking apostle of universal harmony. Having learned humility from centuries of living among humans, she works tirelessly to promote peace and love throughout the world. Her organization, the Hope Foundation, is a non-profit venture with chapters all over the Empire and Quenardya, which works to promote peace in the war-torn Southlands, charity to the poor and needy at home and abroad, and cultural exchanges to promote understanding between nations. While no longer holding herself up as a religious icon, Velena is greatly loved by most of the people who know of her. A humble, selfless Mother Teresa with the photogenic, vibrant nature of Princess Diana and the motivational speaking ability of the Dalai Lama, she is perhaps the most widely recognized personality of the modern world.
Velena also has an influence (but does not appear) in the story The Cookoo.
