Introduction
Seralina Grayhaven was the head of a medical research company, Seraph Diagnostic Solutions. Her scientists had worked out a cheaper assay for a medical condition called Cranning Syndrome with 97% accuracy (at a fraction of the cost). It was her intent to work with the Internatioinal Red Spiral to provide the assay to the poor. After this assay was developed, she was approached by Malcolm ard'Valos with a proposal to buy the company from her. Malcolm intended to sell the assay to those who could afford it at an obscenely high profit margin, while simultaneously offering free testing to the poor through the Church of Eternal Brotherhood. Seralina didn't like the idea of using her company's work to promote the CEB's religious agenda, and she refused the offer.
Offended at Seralina's refusal to bargain, Malcolm then used his political and economic influence destroy her reputation, portraying her as an irresponsible maverick who would drive the company into the ground. The investors were spooked and withdrew their support, and Seralina's partner sold his 50% share of the company to Malcolm in exchange for a research post within Malcolm's organization. Faced with the choice of dealing with Malcolm or dissolving the company (and thus absorbing personal responsibility for half of the company's now-massive debts), Seralina agreed to sell her share of the company to Malcolm. She extracted a deal from him to protect all of her employees from being fired, having their salaries cut, or being turned into thralls; in exchange, she agreed to become Malcolm's thrall herself.
Miriam
After being used, and spiritually broken, by Malcolm for an unknown amount of time, the thrall (who no longer even used her own name for herself) was given by the vampire prince to a new fledgling… Miriam Bakhtavar. The psi, instead of continuing Malcolm's style of use, encouraged and fostered Leena. The skills that Seralina had as a CEO found their purpose within the vampire framework as Miriam's seneschal.
After Making the Cut
With Miriam held safely in stasis until Braddock is destroyed, Leena takes charge of Miriam's personal finances — which are quite substantial, given that Miriam has been around for about two hundred years and has spent the last hundred or so as an Elder of the Psi Collective. Leena works behind the scenes to plot her revenge against Malcolm ard'Valos and the organization that destroyed her life…
