Background

Nocturna was the Mistress of Dreams, Nightmares, and Evil Omens.3 Nocturna was tasked with bringing oracles of doom to those for whom the gods and daedra have foreseen great sorrow, tribulation or destruction. However, even though her oracles were of doom, she was considered to be the least "evil" of any of the Daedra Lords. She was always on better terms with the aedra than the other daedra because of her neutrality. Some regions of the Midlands even had regular ceremonies for Nocturna, hoping that she would bless them with pleasant and restful sleep and keep her omens for less faithful mortals.

Also, as the daedra lord in charge of the First Hell, she was the psychopomp of the old religion. This "job" was taken over by the spirit of Revonos after the Great Fall and his own death in the 900s CR.4

Her priesthood wore robes of midnight blue, trimmed in white.5

"Holy" Day

Due to the influence of the Lightbringer Order the daedra lords were considered the "bad gods" or devils. As such, the Daedra Lords did not have individual holy days, but were all combined into one night, Daedra'kema (similar to the real world’s Halloween & Walpurgisnacht, with *much* sharper teeth and claws).6

Current Activities

Nocturna's influence over the mortal world is negligible, as she has no desire for corporeal power. She has her hands busy just trying to keep the Dreamlands in order and keep the Great War from spilling out into the material world. After the murder of her first mortal daughter by Talia's hand, she has remained within the walls of Metamor itself, almost never leaving the opulent splendor of her home within the Citadel. She leaves it to Malger (Dream), her consort, to travel the world and aid in her cause. Together, they work to prevent the release of any sort of magic or technology that would grant mortals unrestricted access to the Dreamlands. Nocturna has become one of Kyia's closest friends and advisers, as well, as she has one of the most detailed, intricate, and accurate information-gathering resources on the planet: dreams.

Malger oversees Nocturna's network of Dream Walkers — both Nocturna's own children, and a small group of humans who have proven themselves capable of defending themselves from the constant strife in the Dreamlands. These Dream Walkers gather and disseminate information through the dreams of chosen individuals. Ethically, this may be questionable, but it's done anyway

Unfortunately, while dream-control software (being produced by a few key spelltech firms around the world, and tied up in perpetual legal battles by Nocturna and her allies) has not yet opened the doors of the Dreamlands wide to the general public, it has allowed the paranoid to barricade themselves away from the Dreamlands. (A dangerous side-effect of this is insanity — deprived of dreams, the mind turns on itself.)

Nocturna is currently helping The Starchild in efforts to protect Metamor (and the whole world) against the upcoming threat. As the Goddess of Dreams, she is one of the three gods who have a connection to time and prophecy7. A specific example was to bring Janus Starson into a pocket of the Dreamlands and working with Merai and Klepnos to bring out a little more of Janus's sympathetic/human side to help swing the balance towards survival.8

In the process, Nocturna was able to call and guide Karenna hin'Elric's spirit from the First Hell by using the sword Elemacil as a focus; Karenna had wielded Elemacil when alive.9 They first introduced her to the Field Commander to provide him with a sense of perspective, and when this work was done the Mistress of Dreams (and former psycho-pomp of the pantheon) escorted Karenna's spirit to the Veil (or at least as far as Nocturna could go, "stuck on this side."10

"She's a strong-willed old soul, to have tarried so long on this side of the Veil."

Merai smiled at her. "Did you see her safely home, then?"

"Aye— as far as I can tell, stuck on this side." That was as harsh a gibe as Nocturna would ever make at Merai for causing their exile. Merai opened her hands in ambiguous acknowledgment. She could not be sorry for her decision, but Nocturna had earned the right to put the occasional dig in.

"Just be glad we had the sword to use as a focus," Nocturna said. "She's thirteen centuries gone; I don't think I could have called her back across without it."

Nocturna and Merai, A Lightbringer Carol (Stave V)

Asariel Starson's spirit is still lingering with the sword, but that is because the spirit feels that he still has unfinished business (making sure that his son takes a different path than him), but Nocturna hopes that in 5-10 years he could be lead to the Veil.
