Background
Per Hallie’s Whalish father, her first name is pronounced 'hal-see-uh-nee'.
Before meeting the fallen Daedra Lord Klepnos she is a very professional doctoral candidate finishing her dissertation defense in manaology at the University of Pyralis. Between her area of study and where she was studying it, about the only risk she took is in her research, and that was backed up with provable mathematics and physics. She did everything to hide her beauty and suppress any sexuality and emotionality. She also works to be in control of herself and prepared for anything that comes her way.
Hard science in Pyralis is an old boys' club inside an old boys' club. Any softness, any sex appeal at all, will be perceived as weak and unprofessional.
Hallie to her roommate, Sophie
Stay professional; stay in control. Animated, but not manic. Confident, but not smug. Balance, balance, balance.
Hallie to herself during her dissertation presentation
Hallie’s field of study is theoretical physics (which includes [[[tech:magic|manology ]] in the world of Metamor City. Her dissertation is titled “A unified model of the Space-Time-Æther matrix and its effects on thaumatogenic fields”:
The question of how mana moved into and out of the physical world, and why matter and energy could not penetrate the Æther, was a problem that had vexed theoretical physicists for decades. This led directly into Pietro's work in the field — and thence into my own, which was to be the final, triumphant integration of past research into a unified, testable model of the Space-Time-Æther matrix.
One of the implications of her work is that divination could not actually see into the future, but only into the past (augury) or the present (scrying).
Right after the public presentation of her dissertation on June 4, 2000 CR, there is discussion about her work being published in a highly respected physics journal called Manology.
The God of Madness, Klepnos, engages her in discussion while she is cleaning up after the presentation, and he begins to turn her world upside down with a simple statement- That her model was incomplete. He also gives her an example to test against the model that would disprove it: “griffins can't fly upside-down”.
This begins a process that leads Hallie, and her roommate Sophie, becoming disciples of Klepnos.
