Personality and Appearance
When seen as a ghost: Asariel is white-haired, grizzled, heavy-jawed, and scarred from battle, and wearing his white battledress uniform.
When he is seen in a vision of Janus's past (when Janus is 12 years old), he has darker hair.
He was a very hard man, very dedicated to his work and protecting Metamor. He was also devoted to his family ("You always did look after me, Father."), but it would have difficult to tell with his very hard approach to life and how he treated people.
Background
Asariel was a man driven by devotion to his work. He was part of the Starchild's lineage and so dedicated to the idea of protecting Metamor from the supernatural evils and dangers that that his spirit was chained to Elemacil after death, each link in the chain forged when he put his duty before love, or his own desires.
When first confronting Janus, Janus will not believe that the ghost is of his father ("Impossible. My father would not have left a ghost. He was a good and righteous man. He died peacefully after a lifetime of service. He earned his rest in the Realms Beyond.") He proves to Janus his reality as his father by using Janus's True Name ("Janus felt the sharp resonance of his name, his True Name, being spoken by one who knew him.").1
Janus's father visited Janus as a ghost on the Long Night because of the thin Veil between the Realms, and because Elemacil was at rest for once and not in use that night. He knows that the path that Janus is taking is exactly the same as the one that chained him to the sword.
Janus' father somehow made a deal with the Realms Beyond (it is uncertain how, and Asariel never elaborates) to give Janus the Christmas Carol treatment and try to safe Janus from his father's fate.
"What becomes of the warrior when his war is over? What becomes of the service man when his service has ended?"
…
"I could not enter rest, Janus. I had forgotten what rest was."- Asariel, to his son Janus A Lightbringer Carol (Stave II)
He finishes his time with Janus saying the following: "But as long as you carry the sword (Elemacil), know that I am always with you, Janus. The chains of my duty have seen to that."
Current Activities
Deceased (date unknown, after 1974 CR and before 1994/1995 CR). Asariel died of pancreatic cancer- Janus states "I remember when my father grew sick. Pancreatic cancer. He'd always been strong, brave, capable. In three months he just faded, withered. From Field Commander to invalid… and then gone."2
Asariel's spirit is bound to Elemacil, due to the strength of his spirit to his work during life. While Karenna hin'Elric was guided to the Veil after their visitations with Janus, Asariel lingers.
… Merai turned halfway back to her other companion, letter her gaze encompass them both. "Do you think that Asariel will be able to rest now? I regret that we couldn't do more to help him.
"That will depend on what Janus makes of his choices," the hooded figure said. "Asariel invested all his hopes in the boy."
Nocturna nodded agreement. "If Janus can make a good show of starting down another path, then at some point — in five or ten years, perhaps — his grip on the sword should weaken, and he can be lead across."
